Basic vehicles and weapons

From Forgotten Hope Wiki

This page assumes the standard keymap is used. If you define a different keymap, the keys described here may not be accurate.

For the short of attention

  • In a tank or aircraft, press X to use sights.

  • In a tank or aircraft, press Right Ctrl to use mouselook when not using sights.

  • In a tank, press 1 - 9 to select appropriate ammunitions.

  • In an aircraft, deccelerate to open the canopy.

  • As infantry, right click to use ironsights to gain an increase in accuracy.

  • As infantry, lie down to use light machine guns, anti-tank rifles or mines.

Basic infantry combat

Use the keys W A S D to move around, and aim with the mouse. Fire with the left mouse button (LMB) and use iron sights by clicking the right mouse button (RMB). Use the mouse wheel to view and select items in your inventory. Alternatively the keys 1 - 9 can directly select an item. Use the R key to reload your weapon.

The accuracy of weapons is greatly improved when using iron sights, crouching and lying prone. Accuracy increases also when you remain still for a few seconds.

Special hand weapons

Anti-tank rifles

You must lie down to fire or use the iron sights on these weapons.

Light machineguns

You must lie down to fire or use the iron sights on these weapons.

Binoculars

Right click to see into the distance. See the artillery system page on what effect "firing" this weapon has.

Anti-tank and anti-personnel mines

You must lie down to place a mine. There is a small delay in placing a mine.

Anti-tank explosives

These should typically only be used from behind cover, because their blast is larger than you can run.

Mine flags

Mine flags, if placed near anti-tank or anti-personnel mines, reduce the points penalty if the mine kills a teammate.

There are many interesting strategies involved in placing mine flags. For example, you can place them without mines to funnel enemies into an ambush.

Mine detector

This weapon buzzes in the vicinity of a mine, and highlights the mine so it can be removed with the wrench.

Bandages

Bandages replenish a small amount of health, patching you up just enough to continue fighting. To use, throw to the ground and wait until the bandage disappears. Bandages are always in slot eight in your inventory. Each soldier gets one bandage.

Flare gun

Fire into the sky to illuminate the surrounding area, to dazzle and reveal hiding enemies. Use sparingly because it also reveals your position.

These are only available on night maps.

Special kits

Pilot kits

These kits contain a parachute and a pistol. You cannot capture control points while using these kits.

Other kits do not contain a parachute!

Press the 9 key to open the parachute while in free-fall.

Medic kits

These kits have eight bandages to hand out and a pistol.

Sniper kits

These kits contain standard rifles fitted with a telescopic sight, extending their range.

Vehicles

Enter a vehicle by standing near a door or hatch and pressing E. Once inside a vehicle select other positions on the vehicle using the F1 - F8 keys. Exit a vehicle by again pressing E.

Note: If you hear a metallic clanging sound when trying to exit a vehicle, your exit is blocked by a canopy (for aircraft), or another object. Move the vehicle and try to exit again.

Tanks

Tanks typically have many different types of ammunition for their main guns, or alternative weapons such as smoke mortars. Select these with the 1-9 keys or mouse wheel. There is a delay to reload different types of ammunition.

To use tank sights, press the X key.

Ammunition types

  • Armour-piercing (AP) - useful against armour and static defences.
  • High-explosive (HE) - useful against infantry, light vehicles, aircraft and static defences.
  • Armour-piercing, capped, ballistic capped (AP-CBC) - as AP, but with improved penetration. Panzergranate 39 is of AP-CBC construction.
  • Armour-piercing, composite rigid (AP-CR) - as AP, but with greatly improve penetration. Panzergranate 40 is of AP-CR construction.
  • High-explosive, anti-tank (HEAT) - shaped charge. Useful against armour with vastly improved penetration except against spaced armour.
  • Smoke round - Directly fired smoke canister.
  • Smoke dispenser - Smoke dispensed in a cloud from the rear/side of the tank.
  • Smoke mortar - Fired in an arc from turret. Short range, but enough to occlude your tank.
  • Canister shot - Shot. Highly effective against infantry and soft targets at short ranges.

Tank positions

Some tanks have additional positions such as auxiliary turrets, hull-mounted machineguns, AA-mount machineguns and cupola positions. Additionally all tanks have a number of open positions where infantry ride upon the tank.

Aircraft

Most aircraft have opening and closing canopies. These close automatically as you apply throttle, and slowly reopen as you release. You can only exit the vehicle if the canopy is open. Ensure you have a parachute before ejecting at altitude!

To view sights press the X key.

To apply air brakes, use the Shift key. On the Junkers JU-87 this also sounds the dive horn.

Artillery and Mortars

See the artillery system page on how to use these weapons.

Static defences

Where damaged, these must be repaired using a wrench before they can be used.

Note: In singleplayer mode, this feature is disabled due bugs in the engine.

Commanders

Commanders must sit a radio or in a command vehicle to issue orders to fireteams, air-drop supplies, or call in artillery. See Commander assets.

Communications

  • As a normal soldier use of the communcations rose (key Q) causes you to shout.
  • If you are holding binoculars, the item you spot will appear on the minimap for your team.
  • If you are a fireteam leader or team commander, use of the communcations rose can be heard by all your team.
